Originally Commentary on Abortion

Whenever I hear about a protest on abortion, I roll my eyes and think to myself, what a waste of a protest. I truly don't understand why this is made such a big issue in the United States. If someone is trying to argue against women having the right to an abortion, I can't listen to them because it seems ridiculous to control someone else's decisions.

A pregnant woman should be allowed to make that decision on whether or not they want to have that child. It shouldn't be up to lawmakers to decide whether a woman can abort a pregnancy. If abortion were made illegal it would cause all sorts of issues. Think about if a woman was raped and ended up getting pregnant, would it be wrong of her to not want the child? If I was a woman and this happened to me, I don't think I would want to live the rest of my life with a child that reminds me every single day of what happened to me. The same goes for teen pregnancies and how a teenager is most likely unfit to take care of child. It would do more harm to the child if it grew up under the care of someone that didn't know what they were doing, not only that but if the child was born and then put up for adoption, what kind of life is that for someone?

Now of course there is the issue of taking the life of another human being. If you ask me, this is not the same as going up to another person and killing them. This is not a human yet and they don't have the same rights as all of us. They can't make decisions for themselves and it should be up to the parents to make those decisions. Its the same as being a minor until you are 18. You don't have the same rights as an adult until you turn a certain age. This goes for many things like driving, voting, drinking, etc. If a woman is pregnant and feels they don't want the child and feels they can't be a fit mother for them, I think they're are doing more good by aborting the child than giving them a bad life.

Let people make the decision of abortion for themselves. It isn't anyone else's business and never should be. This topic is made a bigger deal than it actually is and it needs to stop. Everyone has the right to make their own decisions.

  1. In this unit, I learned more about Roe v Wade, a case that was taken to the court in 1971 and even though this happened almost 50 years ago abortion is still a very controversial topic. We all have our own points of view and opinion on things and I believe that as a society we should all be more open-minded and be willing to listen to the opposing side. There are people who say to be open minded but as soon as you talk against or different to what they believe they will say you are insane, don’t know what you’re talking about, you’re wrong, and walk away or not want to hear the conversation anymore. I have also learned that there are people at both ends who take things to the extreme. For example; extremely to the right or extremely to the left, and being like that, I believe, is not a way to be balanced.

I was browsing through the different blogs to see who’s post I would comment on and I came across “Originally Commentary on Abortion” by Dawson Walton. So, I chose to comment on this blog because only a few days ago I was watching some YouTube videos and came across a type of interview/movie titled “7 Reasons” and it touches on the subject of abortion. I find it very interesting and educational when I watch a debate or look at both sides of a topic/story. I feel doing this broadens my perspective. It makes me see more rather than setting my mind to just one thing, as if I was in one small box.

In his blog, Mr. Walton writes that “It shouldn’t be up to lawmakers to decide whether a woman can abort…” And to this statement, I say that lawmakers have made many decisions that don’t go according to what the popular vote is. I feel as if many decisions are taken without asking the public. In class this semester we learned how there are different topics that concern the U.S.A. and a great majority of the public feel strongly one way yet when laws get passed it goes the opposite way. Why does this happen? Is the question I always wonder about.

Mr. Walton states that “…a teenager is most likely unfit to take care of child.” And I agree 50/50 on that. Because I have seen and know of many moms who got pregnant in their teens and fought through it and became really good moms and other moms who became pregnant in their teens and gave up the responsibility to someone else. So in that, I believe a better education system should be put in place to avoid teens to become pregnant.

Overall I give deep thought to what Mr. Walton wrote about and thank him for sharing this with all of us.

  2. The topic of abortion is one of the most talked about controversies in our society right now. With Alabama passing a near-total abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest earlier this week, I have never felt so disappointed in our government system. Our government system has failed women. The consequence for a doctor who performs an abortion could face up to 99 years in prison, i would say that's similar for a rape charge, but it's 2019, It seems rapist don't receive long sentences. I agree with Dawson that pregnant women should be allowed to make the decision on whether or not they want to have that child. A woman's body is not property of the government.

The 25 white men in alabama who voted to make the restrictive ban on abortion were so eager to tell women what to do with their bodies, but when asked by Vivian Davis Figures (female democratic senator of Alabama) to enforce a new amendment that makes a man who attempts to have a vasectomy guilty of a class c felony, all the men in courtroom laughed.

In regards to Dawson's statement that “If a woman is pregnant and feels they don't want the child and feels they can't be a fit mother for them, I think they're are doing more good by aborting the child than giving them a bad life”. Bringing a child into this world that the mother does not want is not only unfair to the mother, but to the child. There are roughly 690,000 children in the foster care system right now. Why is our government more concerned with abortions than the actual living children in the foster care system without a home?

With the law having no exception for rape and incest makes me sick. An 11 year old child, living in Alabama who got raped and impregnated, no longer has the right for an abortion. She must carry the product of rape inside of her for 9 months and then what? Keep a baby she doesn't want? Put it in the foster system? You can be pro-life without ever receiving an abortion yourself. This new law is not pro-life, it is anti-women. Dawson did an excellent job explaining how the government does not having any business controlling women's reproductive freedoms.

  3. In Dawson Waltons blog "Originally Commentary on Abortion" is a very controversial topic. I respect his opinion on this topic, but there are some points I disagree with, respectfully. When talking about teenage pregnancy, and mentioning that it causes more harm to the child might be a bit generalization. I know people that have had a child while being a teenager and people that have had a child well in their 30s and still not know what they are doing. I don't think that is a reason for abortion. Giving the teenagers prober sex education and teach them responsibility if they are being sexually active to try to avoid a pregnancy. If pregnancy does occur I don't think adoption is a bad choice. If thinking that being raised by a teenager is not fitting why would you think being raised by a couple that has been wanting a child would be a bad life?

I agree that women should not be taken the right to decide what to do with their body and their lives. But I do not think that the subject should be taken lightly. I do believe that life begins after conception and when you have experienced life growing inside you, you would not be able to fully understand it. I completely respect and understand that everyone's life and situations are different and that takes them in different avenues. But I do not think that we should view other people's opinion as a waste of time. We all have a right to our opinion and the freedom to express it and we all have to have an open mind and respect and listen to each other not put each other down for our views.
